Can’t afford an antique clock?

Do you love the antiquated style clocks, but simply can’t justify spending hundreds or thousands of dollars? Luckily you can get lots of antique style examples, at a fraction of the cost of a true old model. How about a grand father style long case, for no more than about $150 US. Probably true that these things are all built in Asia, but you will find the build quality is still very good. Likewise you can find replica old style wall hanging clocks which operate just like the antiques, driven by pendulums. Some of these look exactly like the originals they were copied from, and in fact you will find they run quieter. What you will find is that the cheaper models are actually running off batteries – they are basically a wooden case, with a normal modern electric clock mechanism built into the top. There might still be a pendulum, but in this case it is just for show. A replica that actually runs off the pendulum weight will obviously cost quite a bit more, but can still be had for about $200, which is still much less than the antique. Keep in mind that the electrically operated replica models will keep better time, and are quite silent – I’ve said this before and will say it again, that constant loud ticking can get really annoying even if you love the old fellow. Replica clocks can be found in every style. You can get carriage clocks (fairly small box shaped clocks, first carried by travelers in Austria in the 1800’s), grandfather clocks (the tall, imposing units found in every Victorian mansion), cuckoo clocks and stern looking mantle clocks. If you’re on a budget a replica antique clock can be a great way to add some class to a home. And realistically, the replica antique is going to be a lot easier to use and won’t cost anything in maintenance.
