A Guide to Maintaining Your Wall Clocks
March 30th, 2010, Posted in Clocks, Uncategorized, Wall ClocksMost people have a number of wall clocks throughout their homes. With todays time pressed schedules and multi tasking environment we always need to know how much time we have left. Few people think about their clocks though and maintaining them is surely low on their list. Of course once they stop it moves immediately to the top of the to do list! Lets look at a few simple measures you can take to make sure you will never be at a loss for what time it is.
When it comes to modern battery operated quartz crystal clocks maintenance is really low. Aside from the occasional dusting and changing of batteries there really is not much that can be done to keep these clocks in working order. This is of course ok because of their generally low cost and almost throw away design. One of the things that you can do to help keep one of these,or any clock for that matter, safe is proper wall hanging. Whenever you secure a clock to your wall make sure you have hit a stud or used a molly with your fastener. Feel free to tug on the screw or nail before you place anything on it. Then when you go to hang or rehang your wall clocks make sure that you have properly lined up whatever hook ,or other fastener is available on the clock, with your nail or screw. This is one of those things that many people do not give consideration to because they are more worried about having whatever they are hanging in “just the right spot”. The first time you have anything come crashing down on you or a visitor though it will always be a top priority from then on!
With other styles of clocks, such as pendulum or cuckoo, there are a series of internal springs and gears that will need serviced periodically. When checking out your clock make sure that any gears stay dry. Any other parts that are rubbing on the other hand will need a shot of clock oil from time to time.(No pun intended!) Be careful though because excessive oiling can cause dust and grime build up and even premature wearing of parts.
With these few handy tips your clock should run trouble free for years! Who wouldnt want to keep their fine family heirlooms ticking away for future generations to enjoy though? Every one of them holds a little history that with every sweep of the hand gets greater. Its up to us to keep that history alive.
